a tale from the village

Once upon a time there was a girl with four children and about a million animals. She was very tired because her husband had disappeared to New York to do, er, whatever-it-is-he-does (even he can’t describe his job) and looking after four children was rather wearing. So instead of going to bed she stayed up playing on the internet and drooling over plant websites. And then, because she was one of those irritating people who gets excited about Christmas in September, she decided to start a wish list.
I love everything in Sarah Raven’s Kitchen and Garden shop. It’s a breath of fresh air – the website is beautiful, full of gorgeous plants and things for the garden and the house.
Sarah (who was always my favourite presenter on Gardeners’ World) offers courses at Perch Hill, on cooking from your garden, on floristry, and on my favourite – the cutting garden. I keep hinting about how much I’d like one as a present. As my husband reads this blog, I’m hoping he’ll bookmark this page.
(And if he’s reading this when he gets home from the states, maybe he could make me a cup of tea?)
Other things on my list are
The Ivington Diaries by Monty Don – I’ve read lots of his previous books. His writing is so beautiful that I only let myself read it at night, in tiny little morsels, so I can savour it.
Wait for Me by Deborah Devonshire, the last of the Mitford girls, a title which must have been hard to shake off: I’ll be interested to read how she felt about that. And whether she confesses to the rumoured affair with JFK.
I could go on, but that’s a start: what’s on your Christmas list this year?

a tasteful garden
yea… more great reading suggestions! now that our weather is starting to turn colder, i channel my garden lust into books through the snowy winter.

I would like some chickens for my garden, however I also need a garden as well – so a new home would be lovely.
Would settle for sale of a print
I am pretty lucky in that we buy most of what we want when we want it, the downside is when it comes to christmas is leaves us in trouble
Lottie
I want ‘wait for me’ too. I am fascinated by the Mitford Sisters. I am sooooo behind on my blog reading but today my blog reading time belongs to you so expect a few comments

Great, great gifts to be. All three are idols of mine, would love to take one of Sarahs courses, but a bit hard from Canada. Have Montys book (actually all of them), but didn’t know about Deborahs (what a great name, lol)new book. I went on Amazon and a Canadian book site, found it by three different publishers, all had different page counts, different covers, and one had Deborah Mitford as the author instead of Deborah Devonshire. I find it annoying when that happens, I have actually bought the same book twice, thinking it was a different book, most recently with Roy Strongs.

I don’t do Christmas til after my birthday. Apart from presents we’re making
Carin
Laughed out loud at the hubby bring you a cup of tea thing- sounds exactly like something I’d do (only my hubby dearest doesn’t read my blog, boo, so can’t give him orders over the internet….have been known to text him from another room though!).
I’d really like a bread maker. With another baby on the way I don’t think I’ll have much time for bread baking by hand for a while. Should probably put the new Nigella on the list too. Have already preordered the new Kirstie Alsopp, so he could take care of Nigella (and being a man, I’m sure he’d love to get his hands on her).

Hahaha! I text mine from upstairs when I’m having a lie in, and I have been known to call the home phone and yell at the children via the answering machine when I’m upstairs and they’re downstairs.
I have a breadmaker – mine was a lifesaver when mine were little.

I’m going to ask for very grown up things this Christmas, like things for the garden, the house, maybe a lens for my camera… a diamond for third finger left hand wouldn’t go amiss either but I think I can just keep wishing there!
Love this entry though, the site you linked will keep me entertained/emptying my bank account for bulbs and pots over a cuppa…
Rachael
I’m still waiting for my eternity ring. Maybe it’s called that because it takes forever to arrive? Maybe another hinty post is in order. Hrmm.

I’m going through a bit of a bee phase so anything with bumble bees or honey bees is highly sought after. May have to drag Hubby to Kew Gardens as their shop is bursting with pitchers and tumblers and plates etc.
Hope the front garden makeover is going well!
Rachael
Oh, I love bees! We’d like to have a hive, but not until the children are older.
The front garden is still in the planning stages, but I’ll be doing a before and after post once I get it done!

Either and iPad or Kindle…Can’t decide.
Look forward to hearing what you think of Deborah Devonshire’s book. I read a biography of all the girls a while ago – never a dull moment!
Rachael
Oh, was it The Mitford Girls? If you liked that, you should read Letters from Six Sisters and Decca’s letters – they are fascinating.
I’m definitely more iPad than Kindle – have the Kindle app on my phone, but I like books too much.
