March in the garden

There’s something about gardening which is good for the soul.
I went outside yesterday, and I cut the grass. And then I dug, and weeded, and my bare hands were covered in nettle stings as I pulled them out of the flower beds.
The rhubarb is poking through in the back border, look. I’m thinking about rhubarb crumble, and the rhubarb and ginger jam my Great Aunt Violet used to make by the ton. Recipes later this month.
I pruned the rose bushes. I looked at the skeleton shapes of the trees and bushes and worked out what had to come off. I scrubbed the Eglu and put new bedding in for the chickens. I hosed the patio. Mindless activity to stop me from thinking.
Our hellebores are on the way, the first flowers of spring. I was inspired to get out and try and capture some by the beautiful photos at Charlotte’s Plot but we’re obviously running a bit late here in chilly North Bucks. We’ve even had frost the last couple of mornings – and as I type the weather forecast is mentioning snow. Brrr.

Thanks to my lovely writer friend Liz Fraser (visit her fab and funny blog here) I’m pleased to say that Tales from the Village is now a featured blog on Taptu. So if you’ve come to visit from there, hello. And come and visit Tales from the Village on Facebook or add me as a Facebook friend.
Have a gorgeous weekend. Happy gardening.

lovely photos. I’m jealous of your rhubarb! We can only occasionally find rhubarb here (Provence). From Holland. Not the same.

Oh that’s interesting! Is it too warm and dry down there? Mind you you have so many other beautiful things to make up for it. I love Provence.

I can see me finding a lot of my soul planted in the garden over the next few years. I’m sorry you needed to stop thinking – so sad
Lovely photos

Thank you Merry. It is awful, isn’t it? The mindlessness of gardening is perfect therapy, I think. x

Oh, Must go and look at my Rhubarb.
This year I will do something with it

Rhubarb and ginger jam! It’s the secret to life. On home made scones – oooh, I can’t wait.

Lovely post, so nice to see Spring is finally with us, we are a few weeks behind you, but we are getting there!
Rachael
It’s lovely, isn’t it?
PinkCat
I’m very jealous of you. I keep meaning to get out and garden but it’s always raining at the weekend. How nice to be out in the fresh air among the new shoots. Let us hope we don’t get anymore snow. Someone needs to tell the weather that it’s March! x
Rachael
Hope you’re having a gorgeous day like we are today – and that this is the beginning of proper spring!
Glen
I truly loath gardening – but love gardens! I’m an enigma trapped in a lazy body!
I read your Weekend Rewind story too and you can never ever go wrong with Delia – but I’d rather snuggle up to Nigella!
Rachael
I love gardens, and I love and hate gardening – when I start I think it’s wonderful, but when it’s the end of the day and I’m scratched, filthy and exhausted I always curse myself!
kyooty
Such a calming post.

Yes, I find this blog gives me a bit of zen calm in the chaos of life with the fiendish offspring!

Isn’t it amazing how plants come out at different times in different parts of the country. Our Helebores came out in January this year – I used them in a gallery post weeks ago http://youfoundkelshidingplace.blogspot.com/2011/01/gallery-mother-nature.html
You have inspired me to go out and see what else I can spot now.

Our hellebores are really late this year – they’re usually out long before March!
Muddling Along
Oh that jam sounds lovely – you must not forget to post the recipe
Rachael
I won’t! xx
Charlotte
Now there I was feeling envious of your rhubarb and then a lovely mention of my pics – how sweet you are, thank you so much. Your Hellebores will be unfurled in no time, things seem to emerge at high speed around this time of year.

Yes, they are out already! And so beautiful, too.

I adore my garden. Such pleasure for a little effort. x
Rachael
Hrmmm. Mine seems to be a tremendous effort. I think I might be going wrong! Hahahaha! x

I was out on Sunday – such a lovely feeling to be out in the Sun. It’s warm enough here in West London for my <a href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/louise_marston/5516170882/"hellebores to be out, and I have purple sprouting broccoli cropping already.
Love this time, as you know that there will be new things popping up every week now.

Aha! That’s rhubarb! We seem to have inherited a huge clump and I hadn’t a clue what it was. Once again your blog keeps me on the right track, garden-wise.

Hahahaha! Oh dear, my disastrous gardening efforts are not the best instruction manual you could have!
BucksWriter
Was out yesterday. The odd green shoot but all this cold has done for my camellia!
BucksWriter – most recent blog post – And finally for now
Rachael
Yes, our camellia died a couple of winters ago. Our north facing garden is a chilly place for plants in winter. Brr.
